3 Tips For Dealing With A DUI Checkpoint

You're driving down the highway after leaving the bar when suddenly up ahead, you see multiple flashing lights and notice the cars in front of you slowing down. Uh oh. You're driving right into a DUI checkpoint. The most important thing you can do right now is to try to keep a clear head. Here are a few tips to help you navigate a DUI checkpoint.

1. Think Twice About Turning Around

If you notice a long line of cars slowing down in front of you and you're still a good bit away from the checkpoint, you might think you can turn around and get out of there. While it's not technically illegal to avoid a DUI checkpoint, the police are usually pretty smart when they set one up. They may have a cop positioned somewhere before the checkpoint watching to see if anyone turns around.

While avoiding the checkpoint before you get there is not technically a crime, you could easily commit a traffic violation while you are in a panic and trying to turn around. If you make a sudden u-turn that is deemed illegal, the police can now pull you over anyway, and you're already going to look guilty before you've even rolled the window down.

2. Choose Words Carefully

At the checkpoint, you will likely be asked a series of questions by the police. You should be polite and try to answer all questions truthfully but do not volunteer additional information beyond what is required. Police are trained to observe you while you speak, and they are looking for signs of slurred speech or a scent of alcohol coming off of your breath. Don't open your mouth unless it's absolutely necessary.

3. Follow Directions

Beyond answering the questions posed by the officers, you may be asked to comply with a set of directions. Whether they want you to get out of the vehicle or just want your driver's license information, you should immediately comply with all directions. Too much hesitation could cause them to think that something is wrong and then you are going to have to deal with a roadside test.

If you are pulled over at a DUI checkpoint and are arrested, you will need to contact a DUI attorney as soon as possible. For best results at your next checkpoint, choose your words carefully, follow all police instructions and never turn around and try to run for it.
